Old Skool Doctors

My daughter had her one year check up. She is perfect and healthy. The doctor told me that I didn't need to nurse her anymore. I was surprised so I said that I thought it was recommended as long as both mommy and baby are okay with it until they are 2 years old. She shook her head and gave me a weird look and re-iterated that I can quit nursing now but since I'm not working then it is okay if I want to. It wasn't a friendly conversation like oh you can quit now if you want to, it was more like why are you still nursing even though she didn't use those words.

I don't want to quit nursing. My daughter loves nursing. She just turned one. I realize that we are entering the extended nursing phase but it isn't like she is 5 years old and the doctor needs to remind me that it is okay to quit nursing.

At 4 months old she told me to give the baby rice cereal. I understand that some babies need it for health reasons, but my daughter was fine. I am starting to think that the doctor might be just a little to old skool for me.

  1. I just stopped nursing my daughter in august and she will be 3 in December. I didn't care what anyone said, I loved nursing and she did too. I wanted her to stop when she was ready-although 3 would have been the cut off. Do what feels right to both of you.. its an amazing bond.

I started on rice cereal at 4 months but wish I would have waited.

  2. Irene,

Thanks for the encouragement. I am going to just do what feels right for both of us.
